Materials
Aluminium
Aluminium is a strong, lightweight, relatively stable material from which to make Bifold Doors. Available in a multitude of colours this resilient material is now used in everything from the manufacture of warships and aircraft through to high rise curtain walling and shop fronts. Yet its flexible allows for thin attractive lines when used in residential applications.
Wood
Wood is a beautiful natural material. Being such it has all the characteristics of a living material and can be prone to expansion and contractions dependant on the temperature and relative humidity. Expensive hardwoods are more stable, as are engineered timbers where the profiles are made up of cross laminated strips adding strength and rigidity. But whatever timber product you choose it has to be remembered that wood needs caring for and as a result will need treating with oils or an exterior coating every 18 months to 2 years. Again due to the inherent expansion and contraction characteristics in wood we would recommend a size limitation of 4 metres.
uPVC
UPVC is probably best known as a material from which domestic windows are made. Being a derivative of oil it is only recently that technology has allowed it to be successfully recycled. uPVC has expansion and contraction characteristics that do not lend themselves well to large products that rely on close stable tolerances. Whilst the profile manufacturers continue to develop new systems we have not yet found a uPVC door that we would be happy to fit in an opening greater than 3 metres. The other problem with uPVC bifolds is that many still offered in the UK are manufactured from profiles that were not designed for this purpose, but more for use as single or double leaf residential doors and from extrusions that contain lead, barium or cadmium in the mix
Glazing
The Building Regulation part N covers glazing materials and its location. Updated in 1995 it states that all doors and glazing within 2ft 7in – or 800mm from the floor must have safety glass. Glass must conform with BS 6206 and that the glass should be marked accordingly. At The Panoramic Door company we fit the highest specification double glazed toughened seal units.
PLANITHERM is a new generation of energy saving window glass and the most energy efficient available. Its advanced coating technology reflects radiated heat back into the room, rather than allowing it to escape through the windows. At the same time, Planitherm allows free heat and light from the sun to pass through the glass.
The result? – Lighter, brighter, warmer and more energy efficient homes thanks to the advanced thermal insulation of Planitherm which is 3 times more efficient than single glazed units and at least 25% more efficient than most currently installed double glazing. When incorporated into a 28mm sealed unit utilising the latest technology available by the use of a warm edged spacer bar and then filled with Argon gas the results are astounding and look even better on your energy bills to say nothing about the reduction in your carbon foot print!
Internal Blinds
Blinds within sealed units are all the rage and offer the opportunity to further bring style, panache and elegance to your home, All of our sealed units can accommodate venetian blinds that are actually installed INSIDE the double glazed sealed unit - between the two sheets of glass. These impressive looking blinds never require cleaning, allow you privacy and shield furnishings from the sun’s rays.
The advantage of having your blinds incorporated into your sealed units is that they don’t require the constant dusting and maintenance associated with conventional blinds. Integral blinds allows a room to have both privacy and protection from bright sun light, without obscuring your view, while still allowing light into a living or working space. The aluminium blades can be raised, lowered and tilted to effectively diffuse the light and can be operated by simple draw cord, powerdriver or solar powered remote control.
Some of the advantages of Internal Venetian Blinds are as follows:
- Clean for life
- Protection against damage by encapsulation
